A surprise awaited Republictraders who pushed beyond the farthest trade stations on the Perlemian: They were not the first humans to come this way. In fact, a human civilization spanning a huge expanse of space awaited them.

The Tioneseclaimed that their cluster was the cradle of humanity, and took pride in Xim’s accomplishments. But Ximhad been dead for a thousand years, and Tionesehistory had not been glorious since his demise.

The Despot’s empire had splintered into successor states soon after his death, with those states fragmenting into a brawling collection of kingdoms, satrapies, and petty holdings. Many of the Tioneserulers were little more than wealthy pirates who had tired of enforcing their will at the end of a heatbeam and tried to set up functioning states—which only signaled their vulnerability to younger, less wealthy pirates. Two things united Tioneseculture: a love of wealth and a fear of external enemies. And the worst of those enemies were the Hutts.

Traders traveling under Huttprotection snapped up Tioneseraw materials and finished goods at penurious prices. To refuse their terms was to get a visit from other Huttservants in evil-looking warships of alien design, servants who enjoyed raiding Tioneseworlds for goods and slaves. The Huttsthemselves were never seen in the Tion—they remained safe in their distant realm, beyond all hope of retribution.

The Tionesegreeted the arrival of Republictraders with a mixture of jealousy and wild hope. While Tionesetechnology had remained stagnant since Xim’s era, Republicshipwrights had improved on the Corellianand Durointerpretations of Rakatantechnology, incorporating advances from the Herglic, Devaronians, and Verpine. Republicships were faster, more reliable, and could travel farther than anything in the Tion Cluster.

But at the same time, the Tionesesaw an opportunity. No trip among the Tioneseworlds was particularly safe, and Tioneseships bristled with plasma cannons and torpedo mounts. The Republictraders’ sleek pinnaces and barquentines were lightly armed, and the new arrivals freely admitted that their central worlds had no great fleets of warships.

Emissaries from Desevro—once the mightiest world of the Livien Leagueand the engine of Xim’s expansionist empire—fanned out across the Tion, urging the Tioneseto take advantage of the newcomers’ naïveté. The pirate lords of the Indrexu Spiralagreed to a loose confederation, the loftily titled Honorable Union of Desevro and Tion. Next, the Desevrarsforged an alliance with the Kingdom of Cron, now a patchwork state loosely controlled by Corlassipirates. The potentates of the Jaminere Marches, surrounded by potential enemies, hastily joined the confederation, as did the Thanium Dominion. Under Desevrarleadership, the Tionesebegan reverse-engineering captured Republictechnologies and building war fleets at Arcan,Jaminere, and Thanium.

War was coming, and no one in the Republicseemed to see it, despite warnings from another mysterious society living far from the Core. The Jedi Orderhad left its original home in the Deep Corecenturies before, settling on a green world the Tionesecalled Iduxbut they themselves called Ossus. Except during their brief war with the Legions of Lettow, few in the Corehad given much thought to the Jedisince their departure—and fewer had guessed that they were the young Republic’s secret defenders, working quietly to check Huttschemes and keep the Tionesedivided.

Now strange warriors with glowing swords appeared in the Core, warning of war—but to little avail. Tionesewar fleets stormed down the Perlemian, meeting little resistance. Abhean—the farthest major Republicworld—fell to the raiders. Then Rochewas lost, and Lantillies, and the trade world of Tirahnn, with the Tionese gaining new ships with every victory.

Belatedly aware of its peril, the Republicembarked on a crash program of warship production, with hulls taking shape above industrial worlds such as Axum, Foerost, and Perlemia. But it was too late: Convoys of Tioneseraiders ranged up and down the Perlemian, backed by larger warships. Perlemia’s fabled shipyards were all but destroyed by dreadful new weapons—pressure bombs, powerful airbursts whose heat storms and shock waves leveled cities—and Axumsuffered the same fate. Pushing into the heart of the Republic, the Tioneserained pressure bombs down on Alsakanand Coruscantitself.

A desperate counterattack by ships drawn from numerous Coresystems finally repulsed the Tionese. Away from the invasion route, shipyards at Corellia, Rendili, and Humbarinebegan turning out warships, and the Republictook the fight back up the Perlemianto the Tion, setting up a grinding series of offensives and counteroffensives that would range up and down the trade route for nearly a century. The Perlemianworlds became armed camps, and Coreworld inhabitants lived in fear of Tionesesuicide ships. Elsewhere, Republicagents (many of whom were well-connected merchants) stirred up the Huttsagainst their ancient rivals, forcing the Tioneseto guard their outlying possessions against raiders and pirates. Finally, following an agonizing internal debate, the Jedientered the war as Republiccommanders, concerned that the galaxy would sink into barbarism without their intervention.

The Tionesewar effort had been doomed as soon as several key Republicworlds put their industrial might behind the military buildup. But decades of war had turned the struggle into a fanatical cause: Between the marauding Huttsand the technological superiority of the Republic, the leaders of the Tionfelt their culture faced extinction. And so the Tionesefought on, subjecting Republicworlds and citizens to a steady drumbeat of sneak attacks, raids, and terrorist acts. That radicalized the Republicas well, and a strategy of total war was adopted. The Republicstormed up the Perlemianand through the Tion, with pressure bombs devastating Cadinth,Jaminere, Thanium, Chandaar, and Barseg.Desevrowas the last to fall, absorbing a frightful punishment before finally offering its unconditional surrender.

It was refused: The Republic’s military leaders had decided to sterilize Desevroas an object lesson to the rest of the Tionese.

That led the Jedito break with the Republic. The Orderhad joined the war in order to prevent civilization from sinking into barbarism, but barbarism was winning the day anyway—and now the Jediwere a party to it. After tense meetings above blasted, exhausted Desevro, the Jediagreed to serve as watchmen, ensuring the Republic’s safety from an arc of fortress worlds around the Tion’s Corewardborders. The assault on the Republicturned out to be the Tion’s last gasp as a galactic power: Within centuries it was part of the Republic, and no more troublesome than other regions with old quarrels against the wealthy systems of the Core.

Those systems soon regarded the centralized military as a danger, fearing a recurrence of the fanaticism that had been on display in the Tion. With the Tionesethreat checked by both the Jediand the Republic’s economic might, the Core Worldsvoted (over the objection of many Rimwardsystems) to disband the standing military, returning the majority of its units to the control of individual systems and sectors. The small Republicmilitary would patrol the frontier and respond to crises, relying on sectorial and system interests to contribute forces in case of a larger conflict.

Finally, the Jedi’s self-imposed exile from the Republichad come to an end. The tide of Republicexpansion had reached Ossus, and the Jedihad chosen to play a formal role in the Republic’s defense. Their decision would be the subject of debate on Ossusfor centuries to come.
最终，绝地武士自愿进行的离开共和国的流亡生涯宣告结束，共和国的扩张浪潮已抵达奥苏斯，绝地需要选择在共和国的防御上扮演正式角色，他们的决定将会影响接下来几个世纪内关于奥苏斯的辩论主题。
